OUR SUCCESSES

INVESTIGATION

  • Project Mamba

Involved a counter-investigation into an extradition request by the South African authorities. A prominent businessman was arrested in the UK on an Interpol warrant and was undergoing extradition procedures. Aegis deployed to South Africa and established the enquiring was politically motivated and resolved the issue at source. Once proceedings had been halted in South Africa the UK extradition request was dropped.
  • SFO – Project Merlin

Aegis was called in by City lawyers to counter-investigate on SFO enquiry. Aegis established areas of concern in the official enquiry which could have amounted to an abuse of process. Following direct negotiations with the SFO all criminal proceedings were dropped.
  • European Arrest Warrants (EAW) – Greece and Cyprus

Aegis has been retained by City lawyers representing clients undergoing EAW proceedings. Aegis has made enquiries in Greece and Cyprus to establish flaws in local police investigation which would amount to an abuse of process in a UK court. Following negotiations the EAW had been withdrawn.

LITIGATION

  • Greener Solutions Limited

We have represented an Appellant in the First Tier Tax Tribunal, where the Appellant had bought mobile phones and sold them as exports. The Tribunal accepted the Appellant’s argument that an unpaid consultant was responsible for the transactions causing the Tribunal to find that the Appellant had neither direct knowledge of a tax loss or the means to know that one existed. • Project Juno

We have also successfully overturned a penalty issued by HMRC that was levied against an individual who had previously been a phone trader, but had nothing to do with the company after HMRC had completed what was known as extended verification. Following the service of appeal and a request for further particulars, the penalty was withdrawn.
  • Millennium Cash and Carry Ltd

Aegis successfully judicially reviewed HMRC’s actions following detention of substantial amounts of duty paid alcohol, causing Millennium’s business enormous harm. Aegis were able to take forward strong arguments that the powers HMRC were using could not be used in the way officers from HMRC claimed during their detention.

Aegis are now representing Millennium in a claim for damages and have successfully established that such claim may include consequential losses such as past and future lost profits and have successfully obtained payment of interim damages.
